The Thinker Contemplation Statue by Rodin Bookshelf Size 10H

Rodin Thinker Statue is one of the most recognized images of deep thought in Western art. Created by Auguste Rodin between 1879 and 1889, this figure became a visual symbol of intellectual focus, inner struggle, and serious reflection. In its earliest context, Rodin intended the figure as a portrait of Dante, author of The Divine Comedy, seated above a much larger sculptural world.

AUGUSTE RODIN (1840-1917)
Between Romanticism and Impressionism, this self-willed Frenchman created some of the most renowned sculptures in art history. He possessed a remarkable talent for conveying emotions in his compositions by emphasizing gesture. Moreover, his rough surface texture, characterized by deep hollows, created strong shadows and a sense of naturalism in the depiction of the human form. As Rodin himself stated, his objective was to “render inner feelings through muscular movement.” He accomplished this by combining his profound knowledge of anatomy and movement with meticulous attention to the body’s surfaces. He famously remarked, “The sculptor must learn to reproduce the surface, which encompasses all that vibrates on it—soul, love, passion, life…Sculpture, therefore, is the art of hollows and mounds, not of smoothness or even polished planes.”
