An aryballos was a small vessel for precious perfumed oil. Greeks used these vessels widely from the 7th century BC. Athletes carried them to the gymnasium, where oil played an important role in body care.
Aryballoi were usually small and rounded, but some took the shape of people or animals. The owl held special significance in the Greek world. It became one of the most recognizable symbols of Athena, patron goddess of Athens.
