Henri Matisse (1869 to 1954) was a leading figure of Fauvism in France. In his final years, he cut shapes from paper painted with gouache. The Sheaf dates from 1953 and belongs to this late cut-out work. Its leaf and coral-like forms float across the surface in flat, vivid color.
