Theophile-Alexandre Steinlen (1859 to 1923) created his famous Tournee du Chat Noir poster in 1896 for the touring performances of Le Chat Noir, the legendary artistic cabaret at the foot of Montmartre. At the end of the nineteenth century, Le Chat Noir was a gathering place for artists, poets, writers, and musicians, and became a symbol of the bohemian spirit of the Belle Epoque.

The black cat played a central role in the cabaret's visual identity and became one of Steinlen's most recognizable motifs. With its powerful silhouette, curved tail, and piercing gaze, the cat remains an icon of French poster art, still closely associated with the atmosphere of fin de siecle Montmartre.
