According to Greek mythology, Danaïde and her forty-nine sisters were forced to marry the fifty sons of Aegyptus. When King Danaos ordered his daughters to slay their husbands on their wedding night, the gods condemned them to an eternal punishment—forever filling vessels that could never be filled. Rodin transformed this tragic tale into a vision of exhaustion and grace, where soft curves and flowing lines reflect both sorrow and the sensual aesthetic of Art Nouveau.
