About the Artist: Francois Pompon (1855–1933)
Francois Pompon was a French sculptor and former assistant to Auguste Rodin, who became famous for his stylized animal sculptures. Although he spent many years working in the studios of other artists, Pompon eventually developed his own distinctive approach focused on animals. His breakthrough came late in life when his Polar Bear was exhibited at the Salon d’Automne in 1922.
Unlike many sculptors who emphasized texture and surface detail, Pompon preferred smooth, simplified forms. He reduced animals to clean, flowing shapes with minimal surface markings, creating sculptures that appear calm, solid, and monumental. This restrained style helped define modern animal sculpture and made his works widely admired in museums and collections.
